Our Curriculum Vision

At Armathwaite Primary School, our curriculum is designed to inspire a love of learning, foster independence, and prepare children for the future. Rooted in progression of knowledge and skills, our approach ensures that every child builds on prior learning, develops deep and critical thinking, and becomes a confident, life-long learner.

Our rural setting is at the heart of our curriculum. We embrace the opportunities it offers while overcoming any barriers it may present. Learning extends beyond the classroom, making full use of our outdoor spaces and the wider environment. Through hands-on experiences and educational visits, children engage with their surroundings in meaningful and exciting ways.

Curious, Engaged, and Prepared for the Future

We believe that children learn best when they are curious and excited about their education. Our curriculum:
- Encourages independence and collaboration
- Follows children’s interests to keep learning relevant and meaningful
- Is ambitious and progressive, ensuring each stage builds on strong foundations
- Provides real-world experiences through hands-on activities and visits
- Nurtures deep thinking and problem-solving skills

By equipping children with knowledge, skills, and a love for learning, we ensure they leave Armathwaite Primary School as resilient, adaptable, and well-prepared individuals ready to embrace the challenges of the future

How we deliver our curriculum

Every morning, our class teachers deliver high-quality English and Maths lessons, ensuring all children develop essential literacy and numeracy skills. For more details, please visit our English and Maths pages.

In the afternoons, our subject specialists deliver non-core subjects and Science, providing expert teaching across the curriculum and ensuring children receive a rich and diverse learning experience.

Beyond traditional lessons, we offer unique opportunities that allow children to apply their knowledge, develop independence, and think critically:

  • Child-Initiated Independent Learning – Dedicated sessions where children follow their own interests and apply their skills through independent projects.
  • Outdoor Learning – Our outdoor curriculum teaches specific skills and knowledge while making meaningful links to National Curriculum subjects, taking full advantage of our beautiful rural setting.
  • Philosophy for Children (P4C) – These thought-provoking sessions encourage children to explore big questions, develop deep and critical thinking skills, and articulate their ideas with confidence.

Through this dynamic approach, we ensure that all children at Armathwaite Primary develop a love of learning, build key life skills, and are fully prepared for their future.

Our whole school assemblies play a vital role in enriching our wider curriculum, providing a space where children can:

  • Explore global issues, fostering awareness and responsibility as global citizens
  • Learn about key learning skills, such as resilience, collaboration, and critical thinking
  • Develop a shared understanding of British values that are woven throughout our curriculum

These themes are not just discussed in assemblies but are embedded across all areas of learning, ensuring that children make meaningful connections and apply their understanding in real-world contexts. Through this approach, we nurture curious, reflective, and socially responsible learners who are prepared for life beyond the classroom
