Exciting News – Our New Outdoor Learning Area!

We are thrilled to share that our school has recently acquired a new piece of land, which we are transforming into a dedicated Outdoor Learning Area for our pupils!

At Armathwaite School, we believe that learning extends beyond the classroom, and this wonderful new space will provide our children with opportunities to explore, discover, and engage with nature in a hands-on way. From outdoor science experiments and nature studies to storytelling in the fresh air and developing practical skills, this area will become an invaluable part of our curriculum.

Over the coming months, we will be working together as a school community to develop this space—creating habitats for wildlife, planting trees and flowers, and setting up areas for outdoor activities. We are excited to see how this project grows and how it will benefit our children’s learning and well-being.

We will keep you updated on our progress, and we look forward to sharing this fantastic new adventure with you!

Outdoor Learning

our pupils enjoyed a fantastic whole school Outdoor Learning Day filled with teamwork, creativity and plenty of fresh air!

Throughout the day, the children took part in a range of exciting hands-on activities. They built bird boxes to support local wildlife, cooked delicious pancakes over the open fire, created wool letters for our new school sign, and decorated beautiful kindness stones. They even learned how to safely build their own fires to warm hot chocolate — a real highlight of the day!

There was also some serious teamwork involved in digging a huge hole… and then responsibly filling it back in again! The children showed great resilience, cooperation and enthusiasm in every activity.

A huge thank you to the parents who joined us, bringing their wellies, wheelbarrows and muscles! We truly couldn’t have done it without your support. Days like this show what a strong and supportive school community we have.

Pond & Willow Dome

We are very excited to share the latest additions to our outdoor learning area! With support from the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, we now have a beautiful new pond that will provide endless opportunities for the children to explore nature and discover local wildlife. Alongside this, our children worked together to create a wonderful willow dome, which has quickly become a favourite space for imaginative play, quiet reflection, and outdoor learning. Both features will help us make the most of our outdoor environment and inspire a love of nature across the school.

Outdoor Learning Day – A Fantastic February Adventure!

In February, we embraced the great outdoors for a wonderful Outdoor Learning Day, making full use of our new learning space. Under our brand-new canopy, children gathered around an open fire to toast marshmallows, enjoying the warmth and the joy of outdoor cooking. We worked together with the living willow team to build a beautiful willow dome, planted trees to help our environment thrive, and crafted bug hotels to encourage local wildlife. The children also had great fun making seed bombs, learning about the importance of wildflowers and pollinators. Alongside these hands-on activities, we spent time planning what to add to our outdoor space, sharing ideas for new features that will make it an even more exciting place to learn and explore. To top it all off, we enjoyed a delicious lunch outside, making the most of the fresh air and natural surroundings. It was a fantastic day of creativity, teamwork, and appreciation for nature—one that we will all remember for a long time!
