At Armathwaite School, we believe reading is at the heart of learning and adventure. Our aim is for every child to become a confident, fluent reader who doesn’t just learn to read but grows to truly love books.
We know how powerful stories can be — they spark imagination, open doors to new ideas, and help children understand the world around them. That’s why we make reading a shared joy: talking about characters, plots, and fascinating facts, and showing children just how much we enjoy reading ourselves.
How we teach children to read
Children’s reading journeys are carefully nurtured step by step. We start with early reading skills and gradually guide children towards becoming independent readers.
-
Our library is constantly refreshed with exciting new titles and contemporary authors.
-
We don’t just stick to storybooks – children explore:
-
Plays
-
Poetry
-
Fiction and non-fiction
-
E-books
-
First News – a newspaper written specially for children
-
Alongside our everyday reading, we love to celebrate stories in exciting ways:
-
Reading Evening in the autumn term – families are invited into school to share the joy of books together.
-
Storytelling with Ian – each year, we welcome Ian, a professional storyteller, who helps children create and tell their own amazing stories. His visits bring storytelling to life and inspire creativity across the school.
This wide variety means there’s something to spark the interest of every reader.
Parents and Families
You play a huge part in your child’s reading journey. We encourage you to enjoy books with your child as well as listen to them read.
Reading aloud at home helps children to:
-
Hear and learn new words
-
Build stronger understanding
-
Share special, quiet moments in busy lives
It’s one of the simplest — and most powerful — ways to support learning.
